Grapefruit Diet Plan Description:
This fad diet regained popularity in the mid-1970s as a bit of Xeroxlore. It is occasionally attributed erroneously to the Mayo Clinic, which has expressed a decidedly negative opinion of the diet, considering it unbalanced and possibly dangerous.
The original diet was an Atkins Style diet with the addition of 1/2 grapefruit before every meal. The diet allowed only 3 meals a day and did not allow between-meal snacks. Promotion for the diet was either “grapefruit diet plan lose 10 pounds in 10 days” or “grapefruit diet plan lose 5 pounds in 5 days”, and also claimed “there might not be any weight loss the first 4 days, but on the 5th day, 5 pounds would be gone”. The grapefruit was supposed to have fat-burning enzymes, but there is no evidence that any such enzymes exist.
Still, the diet folklore continues today, so much so that doctors seem to be looking into the possibility that the grapefruit can, in fact, influence weight loss. In a 2004 study at the Nutrition and Metabolic Research Center at Scripps Clinic, participants lost an average of 3.6 pounds over 12 weeks eating half a grapefruit with each meal. Participants who drank a serving of grapefruit juice with each meal lost an average of 3.3 pounds over 12 weeks. Many participants of Dr. Ken Fujioka’s study lost more than 10 pounds.
Dr. Fujioka found that the grapefruit diet appears to reduce insulin levels and, thus, affects blood sugar regulation. Still another explanation for the weight loss in the Scripps Clinic study can be found in the report — participants “slightly enhanced their exercise regimens.” Depending upon what “slightly enhanced” means, this might well account for the weight loss observed.
Grapefruit diet plan is the best diet to lose weight?
To be honest, diets just don’t work fullstop. People that go on diets may lose weight, but they’ll find that they’ll gain it back again having stopped the diet – and probably more on top. The key to losing weight successfully is a healthy balance of foods (I usually recommend 6 small meals a day, with a decent amount of protein, carbs and fat present – most people should aim for around 1g of protein per 1lb of body weight to maintain muscle mass).
To lose weight you need to create a calorie deficit – it will take a deficit of around 3,500 calories to burn 1lb of body fat. This is about 500 calories a day. I would suggest trying to cut your calorie intake by 250 calories a day, and increase your exercise levels to burn the additional.
You should be able to healthily lose around 1-2lbs of fat a week. Maybe a little more if you’re very overweight. Anymore than that any you’ll be burning off muscle mass and water rather than fat. (Remember, your body is built to survive, not look good. If you starve your body it will hold on to body fat as its a better source of energy and will help it to survive longer. Muscle takes 4 calroies to burn 1g, fat takes 9 calories – ergo its more than twice as easy for your body to burn muscle as it is fat.
Grapefruit Diet Plan And Menus
The best thing about Grapefruit diet plan is that it helps one to lose approximately 10 pounds in 12 days and that too without controlling the appetite. The juice of the grapefruit encourages the fat burning process. Along with the exercise, which is part of the Grapefruit diet plan, useful results can be achieved.
Please note these things before taking a meal
- Very hot or very cold foods should not be taken.
- Food should not be cooked in aluminum pans
- The duration between protein meals and starch meals should be at least 4 hours.
Grapefruit Diet Breakfast Menu :
- 2 eggs boiled
- 2 slices of bacon
- 1/2 grapefruit or 8 oz. grapefruit juice without adding sugar
Grapefruit Diet Lunch Menu :
- 1/2 grapefruit or 8 oz. grapefruit juice without adding sugar
- Salad
- Any style meat in any amount.
Grapefruit Diet Dinner Menu :
- 1/2 grapefruit or 8 oz. grapefruit juice without adding sugar
- Salad with or a red or green vegetable cooked in butter or spices.
- Meat or Fish cooked any way.
- Coffee or Tea (1 cup)
Bedtime Snack :
- 8 oz cup of skim milk.
